Taking to the New Jersey roads can be intimidating. Since the Garden State is so large and busy, there is inevitably heavy traffic. Drivers who need to use state roadways understand the risks they face. However, the statistics paint an even grimmer picture.

Researchers track the number of accidents across the nation to find out where and why they occur. This can be beneficial in trying to find solutions to the problem and perhaps prevent injuries and fatalities. Recently, Consumer Affairs released a report analyzing which states have a significant number of fatal collisions. It came to some worrisome conclusions for New Jersey.

In its report, Consumer Affairs found that several factors contributed to the significant number of serious auto accidents in New Jersey. That includes heavy traffic, poor weather, and the way people drive. Of the top 11 cities for worst drivers, Camden, Lakewood, Newark, Trenton, and Elizabeth were named.

The researchers used the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to come to their conclusions. The worst city in the northeast overall was Waterbury, Connecticut. Camden was second. The numbers are six times worse than the national numbers with more than 18 fatalities for every 100,000 people.

Lakewood had many drivers who were under the influence, causing fatal collisions. They had just over 7 road fatalities for every 100,000 people. For Newark, they had 10 road deaths for every 100,000 peoples. Trenton was just under 10 for 100,000 people. Coming in 11th was Elizabeth.

In addition to the weather and traffic congestion, driver behavior plays a major role in the number of accidents that happen and their severity. DUIs are referenced in the Consumer Affairs study. Distracted driving is a common catalyst for accidents. Recklessness is always a concern. When drivers head out onto the state roads, they need to be attentive to these problems. It is also vital after an accident to know how and why it might have happened.

Auto accidents need to be fully investigated

A crash can have severe ramifications personally, financially, and professionally. People who have been in an auto accident in New Jersey must be cognizant of the state’s notorious reputation for road safety when they decide how to move forward.
