Drunk driving deaths remain elevated after 2020

On Behalf of | Sep 5, 2025 | Car Accidents

The aftermath of 2020 included a surge in traffic deaths related to drunk driving.

According to the National Safety Council, in 2020, 11,727 people died in motor vehicle accidents where at least one motorist had a BAC of at least .08.  This number accounted for about 30% of all traffic-related deaths that year.

In 2021, 13,599 people died, accounting for just over 31.5% of all traffic-related deaths. The numbers did not change much in 2022. While the number of fatalities in 2023 decreased to 12,429, this figure was still significantly higher than 2019’s or 2020’s final numbers.

Experts who have analyzed why drunk driving deaths are increases attribute this disturbing trend to deteriorating public mental health. The study also noted that, relatively, there is a shortage of law enforcement officers to do the work of getting drunk and drugged drivers off the streets.

Whatever the reasons, it is frustrating and bewildering that drunk driving continues despite all the public service announcements and law enforcement efforts. Everyone knows by now that driving under the influence is both illegal and unsafe.

New Jersey residents who get hurt by drunk drivers should know their options

In addition to criminal penalties, New Jersey law also makes drunk drivers responsible to pay compensation to those they injure as well to the families of any victims they kill.

The victim may receive reimbursement for their medical bills and ongoing medical care. They may also receive lost income and non-economic damages like pain and suffering. In some cases, the victims, including grieving family members, may be eligible to receive punitive damages.

Victims of drunk drivers have a right to justice, and they also will likely need financial support after a serious injury or death. Those in Bergen County who have been involved in an accident with a drunk driver should make sure they understand their legal options.
