LaRose Industries recalled about 224,100 Cra-Z-Art Gemex and Gel2Gem kits, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a news release on Thursday, Mar. 27. The agency said the jewelry kits contain a chemical banned in children’s products, violating the Federal Hazardous Substances Act.
The resin, hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA), can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation or sensitization if not fully cured.
“Once cured, the resin no longer presents the hazard,” the CPSC said.
The uncured resin poses a serious safety risk if touched, inhaled, or ingested in its liquid form. Jewelry already made with the kits should be inspected to confirm it has hardened completely.
