The dangers of crowd surges in New Jersey

On Behalf of | Nov 12, 2021 | Personal Injury

Crowds are sometimes seen as an inconvenience because they put people in the way of getting where they need to go or delay desired events. What many people don’t realize is that large groups of people can also be dangerous. Crowd surges have caused serious issues and led to countless premises liability cases. Read on to learn more about their dangers.

Stampedes

A stampede is a situation where a large crowd of people all rushes to one place at the same time. This is typically caused by someone in the group triggering fear or panic. Stampedes are extremely dangerous because of how quickly they happen, and there’s no way to predict when they will occur.

Many premises liability cases exist as a result of stampedes, especially if the owner of the premises in question hadn’t taken the necessary precautions to prevent such an occurrence. Stampedes can cause numerous injuries, some of which are life-threatening or even fatal.

Squeezing and asphyxiation

Another dangerous effect of crowd surges is excessive “squeezing.” This occurs when people get too close to each other and push against one another in such a way as to make it harder for everyone involved. It can happen quickly, causing asphyxiation and suffocation, which can lead to serious injuries or even death. This can also lead to numerous premises liability cases if the owner of the property failed to take any measures that would prevent such a thing from happening, such as having enough security personnel on hand.

Property damage

Another dangerous aspect of crowd surges is the damage they can cause to property. For example, if a large group congregates in front of a building and rushes forward as one mass, it’s possible for them to knock down barricades or other physical objects that may be there.

It can be devastating to experience injuries due to crowd surges. It can be even more devastating when you or someone close to you dies as a result. It’s true that owners and managers can be held liable for such issues if they didn’t do enough to prevent such an incident.
