Most common causes of car accidents

On Behalf of | Jan 3, 2019 | Firm News

Imagine driving to work in Hackensack on a clear but cold Monday morning. You take the same route as usual and even stop by your favorite café for a cup of coffee and croissant. The week is off to a good start. That is, until you approach the final intersection before the parking lot of your workplace.

As you come to a stop at the light, you glance up to your rearview mirror just in time to see the car that is going too fast to stop before it hits you. Now, you have a damaged car, pain in your back and neck, and you will have to miss work for at least several days if not weeks.

Car accidents happen every day across the United States adding up to approximately 10 million wrecks per year. One of the ways that you can reduce your likelihood of becoming involved in a wreck is by understanding the common causes of car accidents.

Drinking and driving

It goes without saying that drunk drivers are some of the most dangerous motorists on the road. If you plan to have a night out that involves drinking, always plan ahead and either have a designated driver with you, bring money for cab fare or use a rideshare service. In addition, if you happen to be on the road close to the time that the bars are closing, be extra alert for intoxicated drivers that might be on the road with you.

Speeding

Speeding is another leading cause of car accidents and usually plays a role in approximately one-third of collisions in the country. Some people speed because they are late and trying to make up lost time. Other people speed simply because they think every road is a race track. To avoid the temptation of speeding, always give yourself enough time to get to your destination. It is, obviously, better to arrive late than not at all.

Distracted driving

Distracted driving is just as dangerous as drunk driving and for many of the same reasons. A person who is distracted is not paying attention to the road and has slower reaction times, much like an intoxicated driver. When you are driving, remember that the phone call or text can wait until you are safely stopped.

While understanding the leading causes of car accidents can help you avoid one, it is not always possible to avoid the actions of another driver who makes poor decisions. If you have been the victim of a reckless or negligent driver, you might be able to file a claim for your injuries and the damages to your vehicle.
