Actions to avoid after a car crash

On Behalf of | Jan 17, 2022 | Car Accidents

If you are involved in a car crash while traveling in New Jersey, you may experience serious injuries as well as extensive property damage. Depending on the circumstances of your case, it may be possible to obtain compensation for any damages that you incur. However, this assumes that you avoid a series of mistakes that might jeopardize your ability to do so.

Don’t apologize to anyone at the scene

Apologizing to other people at the crash scene may be taken as an admission of guilt. Therefore, you should refrain from doing so even if you believe that you might have played a role in causing the wreck to occur. If anyone is pressuring you to say that you’re sorry, it may be a good idea to get back into your car until an officer arrives. At that point, they will be able to take your statement and obtain the other driver’s information on your behalf.

Don’t talk about the case

It’s generally in your best interest to refrain from talking about your motor vehicle accident case to anyone other than your attorney until it has been resolved. Doing so may provide the defendant with evidence that might be used to imply that you were liable for the accident. It might also provide the defendant with the ability to argue that a broken bone, concussion or other injuries weren’t caused by that individual’s actions.

Seek medical attention

It’s likely that you’ll miss the signs of a concussion, internal bleeding or whiplash in the first minutes and hours after an accident. This is because your body will be filled with adrenaline designed to mask the pain that it feels. Therefore, it is a good idea to see a doctor immediately after a crash so that you can create that link between the accident and your injuries.
