Decreasing the risk of head-on accidents

On Behalf of | Aug 9, 2021 | Car Accidents

When driving on roads in New Jersey, you need to pay attention to what’s in front of you in order to decrease the risk of a head-on collision. Here are a few tips to keep in mind to keep you and your passengers safe.

Road signs

Pay close attention to the signs on the road when you’re driving as this can significantly decrease the likelihood of a car accident. You want to avoid areas that clearly state you’re not supposed to enter or that show you the correct direction to drive. You also need to pay attention to speed limit signs as this can sometimes be a factor in head-on collisions.

Other vehicles

If you see a car going the wrong direction in your lane, you should begin slowing your vehicle without slamming on the brakes. Try to steer your vehicle to the right side of the road to decrease the likelihood of colliding. It’s sometimes better to hit a mailbox or a ditch instead of another car. If there’s an open area, try to navigate to it so that the other car can get past you.

Stay alert

You want to do everything possible to stay alert while driving to reduce the risk of a head-on collision. If you’re drowsy, consider pulling over to a rest area to take a nap. You could also stay in a hotel until you’re rested enough to get behind the wheel again. Avoid drinking and driving as well because this could inhibit your perception on the road.

Staying safe on the road is everyone’s responsibility. Whether it’s passing on the correct side of a vehicle or slowing down on the road, there are several ways that you can increase your own safety and that of your passengers.
