Bison Burgers Behind E. coli Infections in NJ

The product liability attorneys at Breslin and Breslin are reporting that two New Jersey residents – from Bergen and Middlesex counties – have been infected in a multi-state outbreak of E. coli infections linked to buffalo burgers, federal officials said Wednesday.

They are among 21 people in seven states who became sick, apparently after eating ground bison meat distributed by a company in Quebec, Canada. Nine people in New York, four in Florida, and three in Pennsylvania are also among those who fell ill.

The distributor – Northfork Bison Distributions Inc., in Saint-Leonard, Quebec – issued a recall Tuesday for ground bison produced between Feb. 22 and April 30, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The product was sold to restaurants as buffalo or bison burgers, and to retailers as four-ounce burger patties.

It’s not known where the New Jersey residents – a boy from Bergen County and an elderly man from Middlesex – consumed the meat, according to a spokeswoman for the state Department of Health. They became sick between March 18 and June 10, she said. Neither was hospitalized.

The CDC said its reports of illness dated from March 18 to June 18; and later cases may not have been reported yet.

Bison or buffalo burgers are usually considered a healthier alternative to regular burgers, because they contain less saturated fat but similar amounts of protein.
