The North Jersey product liability attorneys at Breslin and Breslin are reporting that Hampton Farms is voluntarily recalling Ava’s brand Organic Cashews Roasted & Salted 8 oz. tubs distributed in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
The company said in a press release that its cashew supplier notified it that the cashews have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
No confirmed illnesses have been reported in relation to this recall.
Testing of a routine sample of a different item from another company came back positive for Listeria monocytogenes, and a subsequent investigation into the manufacturing environment revealed a contaminated piece of equipment that was also used to produce the cashews Hampton Farms received, according to a press release announcing the recall. Although test results of Hampton Farms cashews were negative for Listeria, the company instituted the recall out of an abundance of caution.
All affected distributors and retail stores were notified and the affected products are being removed from store shelves, according to the company. Fewer than 225 units affected by the recall were offered for retail sale.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
