DWI crash involves three cars, leaves man in critical condition

On Behalf of | Jan 30, 2012 | Car Accidents

Last week, a drunk driver was involved in a violent three-car accident in Middletown. The driver, a 37-year-old man from Toms River, New Jersey, was also operating his vehicle with a suspended license. The crash occurred after dark close to the Navesink Country Club.

Two of the drivers, including the drunk driver, avoided major injury. They were taken to the hospital and released. A third driver, aged 54, however, was not so fortunate. The extreme force of the impact pinned him in his car, where he lay waiting for assistance. After almost an hour of difficult work, fireman and paramedics freed him from the mangled wreckage. A State Police helicopter, which had responded to the accident, airlifted the man to the hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

The crash was so severe that all five of Middletown’s first aid vehicles arrived on scene. Luckily, no one else was hurt. There were no passengers in the cars at the time of the crash.

The drunk driver was taken into custody on charges of causing serious bodily injury while driving with a suspended license, assault by auto, and driving while intoxicated. Bail was set at $75,000. Federal authorities are also interested in this man. He currently has a hold placed on him by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. According to authorities, he could face deportation proceedings.
