Report: Johnson baby shampoo contains carcinogens

On Behalf of | Nov 7, 2011 | Product Liability

More than two years ago, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics released a report aiming to call attention to the fact that several of Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo product contains two carcinogens which could potentially cause lasting harm to babies and their parents. The campaign recently released a second report, alerting parents that Johnson & Johnson has not altered the chemical makeup of that dangerous product, leaving millions of babies at risk.

According to the initial report in March 2009, Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo contains formaldehyde and 1,40-dioxane, two chemicals which have been shown to cause cancer. When it released that first report, the campaign asked the company to change the product.

Recently, the campaign purchased Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo products in 13 different countries to determine whether the company had complied with the request to remove the chemicals. The carcinogens were still present in the shampoo sold in five of those 13 countries, including the United States, according to the campaign’s most recent report.

Now, the campaign is urging consumers to boycott all Johnson & Johnson baby products until the company makes good on its promise to remove the chemicals from all of its products. Johnson & Johnson responded with a statement claiming that it has been working to reduce levels of the cancer-causing chemicals in its baby products, and that it has released a new “Johnson’s Natural” line which does not contain either of the carcinogens. Hopefully, this process will continue until there are no longer any of these dangerous chemicals in any of Johnson & Johnson’s products.
