Takata Urged to Speed Up Recall

On Behalf of | Oct 31, 2014 | Product Liability

The product liability attorneys at Breslin and Breslin have recently learned that government regulators are putting pressure on automotive supplier Takata to speed up production of parts needed to make recall repairs on 7.78 million automotive air bags.

In a letter to Takata dated Wednesday, David Friedman, deputy administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, says the effort to expedite replacing inflation canisters for the 7.78 million vehicles under recall depends on having enough replacement parts.

Takata is under fire for producing air bags that can spew passengers plastic and metal shrapel when they deploy in car crashes. At least two deaths are believed to be tied to the problem.

Friedman asks Takata to inform NHTSA of how many replacement canisters it is capable of producing and how much it will be able to increase production. It also wants to know how many parts can be produced by other suppliers and what kind of quality controls are in place.

In addition to replacing air bags, Friedman says Takata has to stay aggressive in testing to identify any other air bags that could be potentially defective. NHTSA says it has pledged to double its testing program.
