Dodge Ram named least-safe car in the U.S.

On Behalf of | Jun 8, 2012 | Car Accidents

After a rigorous series of tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, an independent analysis has created a list of the seven most dangerous motor vehicles sold in the U.S. Topping the list is the Dodge Ram, which earned the dubious honor through its low crash test scores and low JD Power Initial Quality rating.

The six other vehicles on the most dangerous list were the Chevrolet Colorado Super Cab, the Mazda CX-7 and CX-9, the Nissan Pathfinder, the Jeep Wrangler and the Suzuki SX4. All seven of the vehicles were found to offer drivers and passengers little protection against car accident injuries, and to be more prone to rollovers than other vehicles that were tested.

The four tests that were used to determine the vehicles’ safety rating were:

  1. A frontal offset test, in which the vehicle hits a barrier head-on at 40 mph;
  2. A side-impact test, in which a 3,300 pound object crashes into the driver side at 30 mph;
  3. A rollover test, in which a metal plate hits the corner of the vehicle to see how much force it can take before it rolls over; and
  4. A rear-impact protection test, which examined the seats’ and seat belts’ ability to protect passengers against whiplash.

Despite the low ratings, all seven of the vehicles on the most dangerous list reportedly saw increases in sales last year. Perhaps this will change with the new tests and ratings.
