Woman killed in New Jersey dump truck sand spill

On Behalf of | Jan 24, 2012 | Car Accidents

A New Jersey woman was killed this week following a bizarre accident in which a dump truck carrying a full load of sand toppled onto its side on top of the woman’s SUV, trapping her inside as sand spilled inside and over her vehicle.

According to police reports, the fatal truck accident took place in Cherry Hill, which is about 100 miles south of Bergen County. The dump truck was transporting a full load of sand when the driver was suddenly forced to swerve to avoid a vehicle that had suddenly pulled out in front of the truck. As a result of the hard swerve, the dump truck tipped over onto its left side and directly onto the driver’s side of an oncoming sport-utility vehicle.

The weight of the truck trapped the driver of the SUV, a Cherry Hill woman, inside her vehicle as sand began to spill in. Two people who had witnessed the crash began frantically attempting to shovel sand off of the SUV and get to the woman, but to no avail. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Police are not stating whether the force of the collision was responsible for her death, or whether she was essentially buried alive by the sand.

The driver of the dump truck was not seriously injured in the accident. Police are not yet sure which of the vehicles had the right of way, but they are continuing the investigation into the tragic accident.
