New Jersey dump truck accident injures five

On Behalf of | Oct 26, 2011 | Car Accidents

Earlier this week, five people were injured in a massive collision between a dump truck and eight cars in Riverdale, approximately 20 miles from Bergen County. Although the truck accident did not result in any life-threatening injuries, police department officials say it is just one more example of the increase in accidents in the borough since the department’s traffic officers were eliminated in April.

According to police reports, the truck accident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. on Route 23 near the overpass of Route 287 in Riverdale. The area is known as a “notorious” spot for dump truck accidents caused by drivers carrying heavy loads of stone and soil from the nearby quarries. When descending from the Route 287 overpass, the truck drivers do not allow their heavy vehicles sufficient time to decelerate, causing them to crash into other vehicles at or near the intersection.

This is what occurred in the most recent accident, when the driver collided into the eight cars at the bottom of the hill on Route 23. Five people were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for head and neck injuries. The driver, who was not injured, is expected to be ticketed for losing control of his vehicle.

According to the Riverdale chief of police, motor vehicle accidents have increased in the borough since the last of its traffic officers was eliminated. From April to September, there were 242 car accidents in the borough, compared with 217 crashes during the same period in 2010. There have been six dump truck accidents at the Route 23 hill in September and October alone.
